A hundred thousand pounds of ice has been placed at the disposal of Mayor Brann for distribution, free, this summer to the needy poor of Lewiston. The gift is made by the Lake Auburn Crystal Ice Co., and is made known to His Honor by the company in a letter. It will be noted in the letter sent Mayor Brann on Friday by the ice company that it says that while 100,000 pounds is considered sufficient for this purpose more will be provided by the company. It is probably unknown to the average citizen that the Lake Auburn Crystal Ice Co. now supplies several charitable institutions of Lewiston and Auburn with ice free of all charge and makes a greatly reduced charge to the three largest semi-charitable institutions of the cities.

Who says there’s no free lunch anymore? Certainly not the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, which this summer will receive federal funds to feed many of the children who take part in its programs. Janice Millett, head nutritionist for the Auburn School Department and the Parks and Recreation Department, said last week that all children under the age of 18 participating in programs out of Auburn Middle School, Sherwood Heights School, Pettengill Park and the Tot Lot will be given free “Type A” lunches five days a week.
