FARMINGTON — Franklin County Animal Shelter received a $1,000 grant from Bangor Saving’s Community Matters Monday.

The annual campaign will provide $100,000 for 68 non-profits statewide, Dyan Macomber, manager of the bank’s Farmington locations, said.

The animal shelter was a write-in vote winner, Heidi Jordan, executive director of the shelter, said.

Other local winners include Western Maine Homeless Shelter, Safe Voices and The Pierce House.

The funds will likely be used for veterinarian care, Jordan said.

Some puppies have recently arrived from a shelter in the south and a couple needed some extra veterinarian care, she said. Care that all animals at the shelter also receive.

“We can’t meet the demand for puppies,” she said of local people wanting to adopt. “Some people think we should only care for local dogs and we do. But the puppies can provide some extra income that the shelter needs to care for the animals.”

About 20-percent of our budget comes from town support, Jordan said. The other 80-percent is left up to fundraising.

“Cat adoptions leave us at a loss,” she said of the 1,200 cats a year that find their way to the shelter. “We put more money in to them than we receive from their adoption so we have to find ways to make revenue just to survive.”

An upcoming fundraiser, Maine’s Mega Yard Sale, takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at the Farmington Fairgrounds.

Touted as Central Maine’s largest yard sale, over 100 vendors are expected to sell their personal yard sale items.  Parking is free but there is a $1 entry fee per adult, according to a previous news release.

Maine’s Mega Yard Sale is expected to be a beneficial fundraiser for the shelter. Proceeds will help cover the cost of spaying/neutering, vaccinating, and caring for several stray cats and dogs.

The rain day for the event is the following Sunday, June 28th. For more information, visit fcanimalshelter.org or call (207) 778-2638.
