FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce awarded four David Robie Scholarships Tuesday to three Mt. Blue High School seniors and one home-schooled student.
Each student will receive a $500 scholarship after completing their first semester, Glenn Kapiloff, chamber president, said during the presentation held at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Students receiving scholarships included MacKenzie Dwyer, Daniel Lesko and Victoria Newbill from Mt. Blue and Sarah Neal who has been home-schooled, he said.
Neal said she plans to attend Central Maine Community College in the fall. Lesko will go on to the University of Maine to study biological engineering and Dwyer plans to further her education at the University of New England. Newbill was not present for the presentation but plans to continue her education at Bryant University.
The Chamber scholarship is named after the late David Robie who was instrumental in starting the scholarship program during his time on the Chamber board.
Funds are raised for the annual scholarships through the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and Seth Wescott Scholarship Golf Classic held each fall at Sugarloaf Golf Club, Penny Meservier, chamber executive director, said. Scholarship applications were sent to the five Franklin County high schools including Rangeley, Carrabassett Valley, Mt. Abram, Mt. Blue and Spruce Mountain in March, Meservier said.
“The scholarship is not limited to high school seniors,” she said. “Any resident planning to attend – or currently attending – an accredited, post secondary school is eligible.”
About 20 applications were received and reviewed, Rhonda Irish, Chamber scholarship committee member, said. Most just happened to be from Mt. Blue this year although there were a few from students presently in college, she said.
The committee rates each application according to scholarship criteria, she said. Up to 10 points are given for grades, 50 for activities and 40 for an essay each applicant submits.
