WILTON — The Board of Selectpersons will hold two public hearings at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Town Office.

The board is considering changing the Parking and Traffic Ordinance to open up the High Street parking lot to 24-hour use, but it needs public input, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said.

Four downtown rental properties have no on-site parking but tenants are able to use the Wilson Stream parking lot. Thirty years ago, a downtown grant provided for improvements to the lot for apartment and business parking, she said.

Landlords and managers of the four properties have met with the Downtown Group and are willing to encourage tenants to move to the High Street lot, leaving more spaces in the Wilson Stream lot for downtown patrons.

The board is considering the 24-hour use for a few months to see how it goes, she said.

The second public hearing takes place to update residents on the $400,000 Downtown Revitalization Grant that the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development awarded in May.

The grant is contingent on federal funding.

The Wilton Downtown Committee spent the past three years working on implementing action plan items and working toward a Downtown Revitalization Grant application.

Revitalization activities will be linked directly to the town’s downtown plan, Irish said. The improvements are an economic development priority to stimulate the economy downtown, as well as Wilton’s economy in general.

Other goals of the grant are to improve safety and living conditions in the downtown area, she previously said.
