1927 – 2015

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Dorothy Anne Poole, 87, died peacefully on April 2 after a brief illness at Spartanburg Regional Hospital in Spartanburg, S.C.

“Dot” was born on Oct. 19, 1927, in Charlotte, N.C., the daughter of Oliver William and Mariam Hammett Dodd. She was raised in Greenville, S.C., and graduated from Greenville High School in 1944. She continued her schooling and graduated from college with a passion for early childhood education. On Dec. 4, 1946, Dot married her lifelong companion of 56 years, William Vernon Poole. Over the years they moved frequently with employment opportunities for Vernon, and Dorothy continued with her career working in various childcare facilities. Dot was fortunate enough to have her own daycare, eventually settling in Lewiston, from 1973-1983. Dorothy had three of her own children, Brenda Kay, Susan Lynn, and Cynthia Ann, who taught her more than any professor. She loved being a mother, a grandmother, and even a great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Kay Turner of Boiling Springs, S.C., and Susan Roy of Greene; and son-in-law, David Thibodeau of Lewiston; five grandchildren, Kaleb Roy and Jamey Roy Cotnoir, Ashley and Ryan Thibodeau and Josh Turner; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Vernon Poole, in Dec., 2002; and her daughter, Cynthia Thibodeau, in Aug., 2012. She had also lost two son-in-laws, Susan’s husband, James P. Roy of Greene, and Kay’s husband, Ben Turner III of Boiling Spring, S.C. Her precious grandson lost his life too soon; Mike Turner died Nov., 2012. Both of Dot’s sisters passed as well: Mary Frances Duffie and Helen Vaughn, both of Greenville, S.C.
