LIVERMORE — For several weeks, students in 3rd grade classes taught by Ms. Toner, Mrs. Boothby and Mrs. Mitchell have been studying volcanoes.

Each student had to study one of the volcanoes found in the world. As a fun way to end the project, students created volcanoes and made them erupt using different causative agents.

Some students used baking soda and vinegar to make their volcano overflow. Others used Mentos candies and Diet Coke. Some students added food coloring to the volcano to make it easier to see the eruption occur.

One student in Ms. Toner’s class had his dad help him. They used a block of wood and a chain saw to make a realistic model of the volcano he had studied. The dad counted the number of rings in the tree trunk used and discovered that the tree started growing the same the volcano his son had studied erupted.
