LEWISTON — Pam Little, representing the group Women Giving Back, stopped by the Community Concepts Lewiston office to donate new games and craft materials for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program on June 11.
This community group searches for nonprofits to help each month and chooses items on the company’s wish list to fulfill.
The local chapter began in March 2014 with six members. Currently, 10 women meet monthly for to discuss the next Lewiston-Auburn community nonprofit to support. Each woman signs up for a particular month, announces the nonprofit of her choice to sponsor and gives the other members a copy of that organization’s wish list. The group shops from that list and brings purchases to the original sponsor so she can deliver it herself to the nonprofit. At the chapter’s next lunch the following month, another nonprofit is chosen and the process begins again.
The chapter does not wish to have more than 12 members to allow each member to have a sponsorship choice during the year. In-kind donations are given because each participant wants to be personally involved. There is a minimum sum spent; however, there is no maximum.
“My intent was to keep it simple and I created bylaws that reflect that and make it possible for even busy women to participate,” said Polly Robinson of Women Giving Back. “Singly, our donation would help. Collectively, we can make a difference. My goal is to someday encourage other women to begin a chapter in their community.”
Members of Women Giving Back include: Kathleen Cormier, Stephanie Upton, Pam Little, Julie Porter, Sheryl Whitmore, Mamie Anthoine Ney, Carol Ham, Joan Macri, Susan Geismar and Polly Robinson.
“To have people who care like this in our community is one of the many reasons we are so glad to be here,” said Kristen Gilley, Big Brothers Big Sisters program manager. “I am consistently amazed at the generosity of others to help make our programs succeed.”
