1921 – 2015
FARMINGTON — Ruth E. Poland, 93, formerly of North Jay, died early Monday morning, June 29, at the Sandy River Center for Healthcare.
She was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Lewiston, a daughter of George and Edith (Rand) Nottage, and graduated from Farmington High School in 1939. On June 19, 1940, she married Francis H. Ellingwood. He died Dec. 3, 1944.
Ruth moved to North Jay and on Sept. 6, 1946, married Theron Poland. He died July 26, 1986. She was employed for many years in the hot lunch program in the Jay School System. She also was employed at the North Jay Grange Store and GH Bass Shoe Co.
She enjoyed camping and was a former member of the NAFCA, Pine Tree Chapter, and the Good-Sam Pine Tree Gypsies. She was a former member of the Jay Fireman’s Auxiliary and was a member of Woodbine Temple No. 47. She attended Bartlett Memorial United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling on bus tours, working on embroidery projects and crossword puzzles, going to church suppers and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Dubord and her husband, Maurice, of Farmington, and Marilyn Buck of Sabattus; a son, Rodney Ellingwood and his wife, Margie, of Wilton; brother, William Bryant of Farmington; sister-in-law, Laurel Lee of Turner; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
