As a registered independent voter, I applaud Gov. Paul LePage’s efforts for trying to change the status quo with regard to welfare and General Assistance.
Maine cannot be all things to everyone. If state government is to take care of anyone, the elderly and truly disabled should be the highest priorities.
Maine citizens should not have to wait on a list for assistance just because the General Assistance program is top heavy with asylum seekers. That denies citizens their rights.
Also, are residents willing to sacrifice city services, city workers and paying increased property taxes in order to support asylum seekers and undocumented or illegal refugees?
I am not willing to have my taxes raised again just to give benefits to people who make Maine their destination of choice, for benefits they haven’t earned.
