I sit here on the sofa, finally convincing my husband and our dog (Nylah) it’s time for bed; nothing more can be done tonight.

Just total disbelief.

I’m asking myself who and why could such a person or persons destroy something that we worked so hard for.

On Monday morning at 6:30, my husband received a phone call. He was informed that our log cabin in Carthage had been set on fire and was destroyed.

Hurrying to get to Carthage, our minds by now were running wild. Thinking this is not happening. Being scared of what we were about to encounter.

As we approached, we could see the beautiful log cabin was totally gone. It was all gone. Everything. A total of 15 years of my family, relatives and friends who devoted their time, labor, weekends and vacation time to help put this log cabin up, log by log. It was destroyed in a matter of minutes.

Our cabin was a place to go to celebrate birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and whatever else we could think of. In the evenings we sat around the campfire and reminisced.

Someday it was going to be a retirement home for me and my husband, and then passed on to our children.

Someone out there took something very special away from our family that can never be replaced. We have lot of pictures and tons of memories, but it doesn’t stop the hurt.

Arson is a terrible crime.

Andrea Casey, Mexico

Editor’s note: The Casey family’s cabin was one of two homes set on fire early Monday morning. The other home was about 10 miles away in Wilton and was owned by Kandi Ward. Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to call the Fire Marshal’s Office at 626-3870. The Casey family is offering a reward for information about the arson fire that destroyed their log cabin.
