I wasn’t able to attend the meeting on State Route 4 on June 11 and have not seen any info in the paper on the outcome. That said, I wish to add my comments here.
There is nothing wrong with the physical nature of the highway. It is the mentality of some of the motorists driving on it. They speed, they text, use cell phones and other means of distracted driving, such as a sandwich in one hand and drink in the other all the time steering with their knees or elbows.
Operating a motor vehicle is not a multi-task activity. It demands your complete attention. You can spend umpteen dollars on the road, but until you discipline law scoffers with heavy fines and loss of license, the accidents will continue.

Editor’s note: The Sun Journal covered the June 11 meeting at Central Maine Community College hosted by the city of Auburn and the Maine Department of Transportation, which was the first in a series of meetings in a summer-long study aimed at making Route 4 safer. Public officials intend to blend public comments from that meeting with past studies and new traffic data to make recommendations for the road. The next meeting will likely be held in September.
