WELD — To honor the life and work of Henry Braun, a stipend of $1,000 will be given each year to a University of Maine Systems student or graduate between age 18 and 35 for work that exemplifies Braun’s inherent credo: “The bone of the universe is rhythm” (Miguel de Unamuno).
Braun, who lived from July 25, 1930, to Oct. 11, 2014, was a poet, teacher and activist.
The first entries are due by Sept. 25, two months after his birthday. The award will be announced on Oct. 30.
On single sheets of paper, three poems of no more than two pages each in length may be submitted with the author’s name, email address, postal address and phone number on every page.
Authors must verify status as a present or former University of Maine Systems undergraduate or graduate student (photocopy of current student ID, diploma, etc.) and age verification.
Application materials should be sent to P.O. Box 84, Weld, ME 04285. Include two stamped, self-addressed envelopes; one will be used to inform that the material has been received, and the second for notification of the prize results. Email submission will not be accepted.
Braun’s wife, Joan Braun, will review the submissions and select the three finalists, who will be invited to visit the Braun homestead in Weld in October for an interview. For those who are far away and unable to come to Maine, other arrangements will be made. She will then select the one winner of the stipend and announce it on Oct. 30.
