Regarding the letter to the editor, “Obituary for America,” written by William Sullivan (July 3), I have two observations:

The first relates to his comment about the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision regarding same-sex marriage. He has a right to denounce the Court’s decision. Perhaps “equal justice under law” has a different meaning to me than to him.

Second, the most disturbing part of Sullivan’s letter is his subtle racist reference to President Obama being elected due to “white guilt.” That was particularly offensive to me.

I cherish the First Amendment more than any other amendment contained within the Bill of Rights, so I will respect Sullivan’s right to voice his opinion. However, his description of President Obama as an “unqualified, ill-prepared dolt” is factually inaccurate.

Obama entered Harvard Law School in the fall of 1988. He was selected as an editor of the Harvard Law Review at the end of his first year, president of the journal in his second year and research assistant to the constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe.

I would be interested in comparing Sullivan’s resume.

Equal justice for all is a basic American value that can create a better society. Let’s stop the hate and take time to learn about the value of diversity.

For the many gay, non-white and other oppressed citizens of Lewiston and Auburn, I would like to remind Sullivan that thousands of people in this community do not share his exclusionary position.
