1930 – 2015
RUMFORD — Edward Francis “Ed” Flynn, 85, of Rumford, died Monday, July 6, with his loving children and grandchildren by his side at the Rumford Hospital in Rumford.
He was born in Quincy, Mass., on April 26, 1930, and was the son of Edward H. and Maybelle A. (Abbott) Flynn. He graduated from Braintree High School, Braintree, Mass. In 1948. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from Washington State Teachers College in Machias in 1956 and received his master’s in education from University of Maine at Orono in 1968.
Ed served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. His teaching career took him to Deer Isle, Orland, Rumford, Mexico and Bethel, all in Maine.
After retiring from education, he became a job counselor/developer for Mountain Valley Training. During summer vacations from school, he worked for sardine factories in Machiasport and Stonington, paper mills in Bucksport and Rumford and the U.S. Government fish hatchery in East Orland.
Ed enjoyed memberships in the American Association of Retired Persons, Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Boston Street Railway Association, and the American Legion.
He was an avid follower of the Boston professional sports teams. He especially enjoyed operating the antique trolleys at the Seashore Trolley Museum.
He was married in Ellsworth on July 8, 1950, to Mary E. Jordan, who died in Rumford, on May 1, 2010.
Survivors include daughters, Sharon Farnum and husband, James, of Tampa, Fla., Vicki Bustamante and husband, Carlos, of Rumford Center; sons, Edward E. Flynn and the late Diane Reichert of Gorham, N.H., Gregory Flynn and wife, Caroline, of Mexico, Randall Flynn of Rochester, N.H., and Terrance Flynn of Rumford Center; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Yerkes of Easton, Mass.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife; brother, Thomas; and granddaughter, Bridgetta Mary Flynn.
