Surf Camp for kids started in 2001 on the shores of Scarborough Beach State Park.

Adult Surf Camp started last year, said Dustin Turin, camp director and part-owner, after enough years of parents longingly watching children master the waves.

Now in its second season, adult campers have ranged in age from 21 to 70. Both sessions this summer are full, but they’ve started a wait list and may add a third session.

The camp supplies the boards and wet suits.

“Teaching kids to surf and teaching adults to surf, you really have to take a different approach with the two,” Turin said. “You can pretty much look at a kid and he can stand up on a surf board. They’re like little rubber bands. As we get older, things tighten up, joints stiffen up a little. We get a little bit slower.”

Adults, he said, also appreciate a fundamental approach. Not simply “put your foot here and here,” but why you should put your foot here and here.

Classes also cover the subtleties of “surf etiquette”: When to go for a wave, when to defer to another surfer.

The camp is spread over four evenings, two hours a night, and culminates in a catered beach barbecue.

“It’s a really unique experience,” Turin said. “Everybody is drawn to this interaction with the ocean.”
