PARIS — Reginald W. Record, also known as “Mike,” is the Veteran of the Month at Maine Veteran’s Home.
Record was born in Portland on May 17, 1929, and was raised by his grandparents on Hill Street in South Paris. He worked on his grandfather’s farm until he graduated from Paris High School.
Record was drafted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 5, 1952. He served during the Korean War providing transportation for the post commander.
He did some traveling while he was in the service. He was primarily stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, but traveled to South America, west of the Mississippi and along the east coast. One of his most memorable experiences was riving Queen Elizabeth to a reception.
Record achieved the rank as Corporal and earned the National Defense Medal. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 2, 1954.
Record married Ethlyn “Bunny” Robinson on June 23, 1950. They have one son, Thomas Record and two grandchildren, Michael and Kristen.
After the service, Record worked as a supermarket meat manager. He and his family did some traveling in their RV across the U.S. For many years after their retirements, Record and his wife wintered in Arizona and returned to Maine each spring.
Record enjoys gardening, baseball, football, basketball and is involved with the American Legion in Norway. Mike came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in 2014 and enjoys playing bingo, listening to the music and going on the outings with the other residents.
