WATERFORD — Firefighters from Waterford and surrounding towns were called to a house fire on McWain Hill Road just before 2 p.m. Friday.

According to a witness at the scene, there were as many as five people in the single-family house at the time the fire started and all got out safely.

The house at 5 McWain Hill Road is near the intersection of Waterford Road/Route 37 near the old Springer’s Store.

Fire Chief Adrien Morin said the fire appeared to start on the back porch. It was too early for insurance estimates, but he said he expected the house would be a total loss. Morin confirmed there were no injuries.

The caller who reported the fire told dispatchers that the back side of her house was on fire.

Crews from Waterford, Norway and Stoneham were on the scene, along with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police.

The home is owned by Audrey Wheeler.
