1936 – 2015

AUBURN — Rita V. Lafontaine, 78, formerly of Central Avenue, Lewiston, died Friday, July 24, with her family by her side at Clover Health Care.

Born in Augusta Oct. 27, 1936, a daughter of the late Leo and Beatrice Blanchette Pomerleau, she graduated from Cony High School in the Class of 1955. She married Marcel R. Lafontaine in 1957. Marcel passed away Oct. 19, 1994.

Upon graduating from high school she worked for the State of Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries. In the mid 1960s she worked for the Lewiston Police. She retired in 1995, after many years of service, from Lewiston School Department as secretary at Petengil School.

Rita enjoyed life to its fullest. While she and Marcel raised their children, there were many camping adventures near and far. She valued her faith, family and friends. She was a member of The Prince of Peace Parish. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved celebrating holidays and special occasions with her family. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, church fairs, playing Bingo and cards. Social gathering with her friends was always an event she looked forward to.

Our mom will be remembered for her love of life and positive attitude. She always saw the light at the end of the tunnel. “It will take time” was one of her favorite sayings.

She is survived by two daughters, Diane Richard of Portland, Patricia Monahan and husband, Eugene, of Brewer; her son, Michael Lafontaine of New Gloucester; her grandchildren, Alyssa, Amy and Anna Richard; her sister, Geraldine and Omer Coulombe of Augusta; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Clover Health Care and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their excellent care and attention showed to Rita, particularly the last few days of her life.
