OXFORD — Police said a one-ton truck backed into an elderly pedestrian leaving the Wal-Mart store, knocking him to the ground Tuesday afternoon.

According to Oxford Police Sgt. Alan Coffin, 82-year-old Donald Turner of Harrison suffered head injuries and a bloody nose after the cab of a Ford F-350 bumped into him as he was making his way from the store to the parking lot.

Turner was transported by ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

Coffin said the truck, driven by 25-year-old Kristopher Pike of Oxford, had apparently come to a stop in the middle of the crosswalk and then backed up into Turner. Pike told police he looked in the rearview mirror before driving in reverse.

Coffin said Pike was not traveling at a high rate of speed.
