JAY — Selectpersons agreed Monday to enter into an agreement with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency to share personnel resources to participate in a drug task force.
An officer from the Police Department could apply for a task force position. Candidates would go through an application process to determine if an officer would meet the needs of the task force.
The MDEA and Jay police Chief Richard Caton IV would conduct interviews.
If an officer is chosen from the Jay department, the town would need to hire someone to fill that officer’s position. If the task force position goes away, the town’s regular officer would return to Jay and the person who was hired to fill the position would be let go, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.
The officer who participates on the task force would receive valuable training that could be shared with other police officers on the Jay force, she said.
The town would pay the officer’s wages on a weekly basis and the town will be reimbursed monthly by the state agency.
It is a “win-win,” Selectperson Terry Bergeron said. “I think it would be good for town employees and the town of Jay.”
