MEXICO — Two Mexico residents were arrested July 24 on charges of stealing $2,200 worth of merchandise from Wal-Mart and fleeing in a cab, police Chief Roy Hodsdon said Thursday evening.

Hodsdon said that at 10:45 a.m. July 24, he received a call from a Wal-Mart employee, reporting that a male and female had “just left the store with two carts full of merchandise.”

“The male and female had apparently fled in a cab and were driving away at the time of the call,” Hodsdon said. “Fortunately, we were able to stop the cab, recover the merchandise and apprehend the suspects.”

After stopping the cab, Mexico officers arrested Patrick Daggett, 44, and Shannon McAlister, 27, both of Mexico, on Class C theft and theft of services charges.

The theft of services charges stemmed from Daggett and McAlister “not having enough money to pay for the cab fare,” Hodsdon said.

Hodsdon added that McAlister also had a probation hold, and had an additional warrant out for her arrest for stealing a bottle of vodka on July 16 from the Mexico One Stop.

Among the Wal-Mart merchandise stolen was $2,200 of tools and equipment, Hodsdon said.

“There were 113 different items that they stole,” Hodsdon said. “There were multiple hatchets, chainsaws, gardening equipment and other tools.”

After arresting Daggett and McAlister, Hodsdon said that they were able to connect them both to a 9 a.m. shoplifting at the Maine Smoke Shop on Main Street, where they reportedly stole $25 worth of cigarettes.

Daggett and McAlister were both transported to the Oxford County Jail.
