KINGFIELD — Residents have an opportunity to meet with the new superintendent of Regional School Unit 58 next week to ask questions and hear goals for the 2015-16 school year.
At Monday evening’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen, Selectman John Dill announced that Superintendent Susan Pratt will meet with residents from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at Webster Hall.
Although Kingfield voters very recently agreed to stay with the district, many expressed concern about the high cost of doing so.
Selectman Brian Hatfield, who has heard from taxpayers about how the town is assessed more each year, said he is much more optimistic about the town’s commitment to stay in RSU 58.
“After my last attendance at the school board meeting, I feel as though all of these little issues that I was aware of are being well attended to,” he said.
He said Pratt will meet with school board Chairman Kim Jordan on Wednesday at Kingfield Elementary School to discuss the cost sharing formula.
In other business, selectmen reviewed a memo from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, asking if the town would be interested in having animal control officer duties handled by the county.
Selectmen agreed unanimously that Animal Control Officer Mark Savage had performed his duties adequately and would continue to do so.
“This is a situation that has been investigated in the past,” Selectman Ray Meldrum said. “It wasn’t feasible then, and I don’t think it’s going to be feasible now.”
Vice Chairman John Dill said the Town Office received a request for an abatement for the past two years on a dwelling and property on the West Kingfield Road. Dill did not question the validity of the request, he said, but he did question the current policy of processing tax abatements throughout the year.
“I thought at one point in time people came in to meet with the assessor on April 1,” he said.
Selectmen agreed to postpone any action on the request until assessor Heather Moody could answer questions about the current process to grant or deny abatement requests.
