GRAY — Members of a Maine American Legion post say $15,000 was stolen from a safe when thieves broke into the building over the weekend.

Cumberland County authorities say they believe the suspects entered Post 86 in Gray between 11 p.m. Saturday and 5:30 a.m. Sunday and made off with the cash.

Deputies say the security alarm and phone’s wires were cut. Investigators say an ATM was also broken into. It’s unclear how much money was taken from the machine.

Officials say the post held a barbecue Saturday night for the national commander who was vacationing in Maine.
