DEAR SUN SPOTS: When the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at 8:15 in the morning on August 6, 1945, what time would that have been in Maine? Were we using Daylight Savings time that year? — Melanie via email.

ANSWER: The sources I have found while researching this answer report the atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan at 8:16:02 a.m. Aug. 6, 1945. That is Hiroshima time which is 13 hours ahead of our time making it 7:16 p.m. Aug. 5, 1945 in Maine at the time of the bomb. As reported on webexhibits.org, “During World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt instituted year-round Daylight Saving Time, called “War Time,” from Feb. 9, 1942 to Sept. 30, 1945.”

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A year ago I wrote and asked for help to establish a new program called, “Comfort Quilts,” for the patietns’ use at St. mary’s Hospital Oncology Infusion Center. I am writing to thank Sun Spots, St. mary’s Development Office, the quilters and long-arm people who offered to put the quilts together along with the nurses and doctors who helped get this program on its way.

We have had over 70 lap-size quilts donated in many colors and designs and the patients, and the nurses who attend them during their infusions, have remarked on how popular they are and how they help create a more uplifting atmosphere.
