CUTLER — State police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found earlier this week on state-owned land in Washington County, according to a state official.

The woman’s body was found Monday on the Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land, Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said Thursday. MacDonald said wardens assisted Maine State Police in recovering the woman’s body on Monday.

He declined to comment further and directed all other questions to Maine State Police.

Information about where in the public lands the woman’s body was found, or whether her death is considered suspicious, was unavailable Thursday. Attempts Wednesday and Thursday to contact Maine State Police officials who are familiar with the case and authorized to release information about it were unsuccessful.

The Cutler Coast property consists of more than 12,000 acres of blueberry barrens, woods and wetlands, including 4.5 miles of rocky shoreline that faces east toward the Canadian island of Grand Manan.

Approximately 10,000 acres of the reserved land are located north of Route 191 in Cutler and Whiting, while approximately 2,000 acres are in Cutler on the south side of the highway. A small parking area by the trailhead that leads to nine miles of hiking-only trails, some of which follow the rugged coastline, is about four miles east of the local village on Route 191.

There are three primitive oceanfront campsites at Fairy Head, near the southern end of the property, that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The trails and camping sites are popular this time of year among tourists and locals alike who are drawn to the scenic views where the trail skirts along the rocky shore.
