CARTHAGE — Three local teens are accused of breaking into a seasonal residence, stealing alcoholic beverages and partying there, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Friday.

Franklin County Deputies Andrew Morgan and Cpl. Nathan Reid investigated a complaint of a burglary at a home at 1375 West Side Road, Nichols said. Entry was gained through a rear porch window.

The deputies interviewed neighbors and others in the area and found evidence along the side of the road, leading them to a nearby residence on West Side Road, the sheriff said.

On Sunday, deputies arrested Zachary Demars, 19, on a felony charge of burglary and misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief, theft and violating conditions of release, Nichols said.

Demars was released Wednesday from the Franklin County jail in Farmington on a Maine pretrial contract, a corrections officer said. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 7.

A conviction for felony burglary carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Two Carthage boys, ages 13 and 17, were also arrested on juvenile counts of felony burglary and misdemeanor criminal mischief and theft.

The juvenile cases will be dealt with through the juvenile justice system.

All three teens confessed to the break-in, Nichols said. The parents of the younger boys allowed police to interview them, he said.

Deputies did a “very good job” conducting the investigation that linked the teenagers to the crime, Nichols said.
