DEAR SUN SPOTS: I recently heard the term Cursillo in regards to a Christian movement and was hoping you could find out what it is. Thank you. — No Name, No Town.

ANSWER: Sun Spots recently saw the term Cursillo for the first time, too, and like you, wondered what the term meant. From the National Cursillo Movement organization comes this information: “Cursillos in Christianity is a movement within the church that, through a method of its own tries to, and through God’s grace manages to; enable the essential realities of the Christian to come to life in the uniqueness, originality, and creativity of each person.

“In becoming aware of their potential and while accepting their limitations they exercise their freedom by their conviction, strengthen their will with their decision, to propitiate friendship in virtue of their constancy in both their personal and community life. The Cursillo Movement consists of proclaiming the best news of the best reality: that God, in Christ, loves us. Communicated by the best means, which is friendship towards the best of each one, which is the person and his capacity of Conviction, Decision, and Constancy.”

There is a group called the Lewiston-Auburn Cursillo Ultreya that will be sponsoring a plant sale Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29 and 30, at the Lisbon Flea Market, Route 196 in Lisbon, to raise funds for scholarships that will assist anyone wishing to attend a Cursillo weekend and who cannot afford it. Donated plants are welcome.

From the Episcopal Cursillo Ministry comes this definition of Ultreya: “Ultreya is an on-going, follow-up program for people who have made their three day Cursillo, linking them together in a Christian community that helps them support one another in their attempts to remain Christ-centered.

“Apostolic enthusiasm is sustained as participants share their lives in Christ and are inspired by the lives of others in the areas of faith, holiness, and evangelization. Ultreya provides the continued support to make the Cursillo experience a lifetime one.”

Wednesday, Sept. 23, to see foliage and have dinner followed by a trip to the Oxford Casino.
