NEW VINEYARD — A Massachusetts man died Sunday night when his car went off Route 27, rolled over and crashed into a stonewall and trees, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said in a release Monday.

Jonathan Daellenbach, 29, of Reading, Mass., died at the scene, Nichols said.

Daellenbach had family in the area.

Franklin County Deputies Andrew Morgan and Kevin Hartley were monitoring traffic at about 9:40 p.m. from the parking lot of Maine Wood Turning in New Vineyard when Morgan noticed a southbound car going 54 mph in a 35-mph zone, Nichols said. Morgan started to pursue the vehicle but it accelerated, traveling at 96 mph when it was last seen, Nichols said.

Morgan continued south but did not chase the driver, the sheriff said.

Hartley, who was following Morgan at a distance, saw an indication that a vehicle had gone off the road on a corner south of the Basin Road intersection and discovered the car, Nichols said.

The initial investigation revealed that Daellenbach was the driver and registered owner of the Ford Focus. There were no other passengers, the driver was wearing a seat belt, and the car had massive damage, he said.

Hartley and Morgan are the primary investigators. 

Hartley and Detective Kenneth Charles reconstructed the accident, and New Vineyard firefighters assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
