I am of Franco-American descent and a lifelong member of the Lewiston/Auburn community. My ancestors did not depend on anyone else for help; they took care of their needs in the best way they could. There was no welfare. They sacrificed, did a lot with a little and worked together to build a community.
Recently, there has been news about the development of a medical/resort community in Auburn for citizens from China who would be here temporarily for the purpose of medical intervention. I hope that the new community will not depend on the American government for its needs and that the people will be here to work and take care of their needs, much the same as the Franco-Americans did many years ago.
I trust that their mission here is honorable and within the laws of the land.
As a citizen of the United States, I welcome anyone who comes here to find a better life and who is willing to work hard for their needs, learn the language and customs of this country and follow the laws and regulations that govern this country.
America is a melting pot of many different races, cultures and people who all call themselves Americans. We must keep in mind that most of the people who got here did so with hard work, tolerance and perseverance, and did not depend on the government for support.
America cannot support the entire world.
