String band to perform at church
AUBURN — The Seminole String Band will hold a concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Marston’s Corner Baptist Church, 752 Beech Hill Road.
The multi-generational Norton family ensemble specializes in gospel bluegrass music, writing and performing many of their own songs. They play guitar, banjo and violin as well as other stringed instruments.
Retired educators to hear speakers
LEWISTON — The first meeting of the Androscoggin Retired Educators Association will be held at the Ramada Inn at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. The meal will be a turkey dinner at a cost of $11.
George and Pat Jacobs will speak about their photographic safari in Kenya.
Members are asked to bring a nonperishable food item or a small cash donation to each meeting, which will be given to a local food pantry.
The executive committee decided to donate $300 to a school food pantry for the Day of Caring on Friday, Sept. 11. The school will be named at the September meeting.
Dues this year are payable in September and are $10 for retired educators, $6 for their spouses and free for honorary members (age 85 or older).
All retired educators are invited to join.
Reservations for the Sept. 9 meeting must be made by Friday, Sept. 4, by sending a check, made out to AREA, to Ruben and Susan Cornelius, 23 Crowley Road, Sabattus, Me 04280.
Golden Age Club to have dinner
AUBURN — The IHM Golden Age Club will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Sacred Heart Church Hall.
After a social hour, members will have a harvest dinner with assorted desserts. A cookie swap will follow. Call Paula at 576-4082 by Tuesday, Sept. 1, for reservations. All age 50 and over are welcome.
Labor Day Saturday to feature yard sale
WAYNE — First Saturday at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 5.
There will be a book sale, boutique breakfast and Labor Day weekend special — a mini-yard sale, featuring bargains on some big ticket items, including a water pump and a Jotul wood stove, as well as games, household treasures and original artwork.
All proceeds will benefit the Wayne Library Association.

DANVILLE — Danville Junction Grange will host a bean supper on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Pownal to host spaghetti, baked bean supper
POWNAL — The North Pownal United Methodist Church, 851 Lawrence Road, will hold a baked bean and spaghetti supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5.
On the menu are three kinds of beans, spaghetti with meat sauce, potato salad, coleslaw, biscuits and brown bread, pickled beets and assorted homemade pies.
The cost for adults is $8, children ages 4 to 12 $3. Children 3 and younger are free. The event is wheelchair accessible.

Take-Out Bean Suppers begin for season
LEWISTON — The Holy Cross Knights of Columbus Council 12652 will begin Take-Out Bean Suppers for the 2015 and 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
They will serve their special recipe beans, coleslaw, buns, ham, bologna and desserts. Meals can be purchased as a package deal or as single items with a variety of prices.
Orders may be called in after noon on the day of take-out at 207-212-5163. They may be picked up at Holy Cross church hall, 1080 Lisbon St.
Legion Post to sponsor supper
GRAY — There will be a spaghetti and meatball supper from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Gray America Legion Post 86, 15 Lewiston Road, in support of veterans and their families.
Besides spaghetti and meatballs, there will be salads and desserts available. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children under age 12.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Bridge Club winners of the quarterly championship at the Lewiston Armory on Aug. 24 were: N/S first, Debra Gardner and Paul Sherman; second, Nancy Farmer and Luke Merry; third, Richard Balian and Les Buzzell; second in B, Ellie and George Wigton; E/W first, Jan and Vern Arey; second in A/first in B and C, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; third in A/second in B and C, Claire Lyons and Paul Clement.
Winners of the quarterly championship on Aug. 25 were: first, Sharron Hinckley and Fred Letourneau; second, Paul Sherman and Mike True; third, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; fourth and fifth tie, Richard Balian and Paul Clement with Marta Clements and Hazel Glazier; first in C, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe.
