Writers wanted for competition

TOPSHAM — The Topsham Public Library, 25 Foreside Road, is accepting submissions beginning Sept. 1 for its annual writing competition, The Joy of the Pen. The competition is free to enter for year-round Maine residents, amateur and professional.

Prizes will be awarded for fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, Maine-related nonfiction and teen. Deadline for submission is Saturday, Oct. 10. Submit online at joyofthepen.topshamlibrary.org.

A reception and reading will be held on Nov. 14 to announce the winners.

Take-Out Bean Suppers begin

LEWISTON — The Holy Cross Knights of Columbus Council 12652 will begin Take-Out Bean Suppers for the 2015 and 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

They will serve their special recipe beans, coleslaw, buns, ham, bologna and desserts. Meals can be purchased as a package deal or as single items with a variety of prices.

Orders may be called in after noon on the day of take-out at 207-212-5163. They may be picked up at Holy Cross church hall, 1080 Lisbon St.

Legion Post to sponsor supper

GRAY — There will be a spaghetti and meatball supper from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Gray American Legion Post 86, 15 Lewiston Road, in support of veterans and their families.

Besides spaghetti and meatballs, there will be salads and desserts available. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children under age 12.

Center offering Quit For Life session

LEWISTON — The Dempsey Center will present Quit For Life, a free tobacco-cessation program, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 9 to Oct. 7, at 29 Lowell St., fifth floor.

Presented in collaboration with Healthy Androscoggin, the five-week program is free and designed to teach participants to become tobacco-free. Topics will include preparing to quit, getting through the first few days and avoiding triggers to start smoking again.

St. Anne Sodality meeting

LEWISTON — The Ladies of St. Anne Sodality of Holy Family, Prince of Peace Parish, will hold a general membership meeting beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Parish Hall.

A Mass will be held followed by a chicken pot pie dinner. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased before Sept. 10.

Village Day to celebrate Civil War service

GREENE — Greene Village Day will celebrate the men and women who fought and supported the re-uniting of America throughout the Civil War from 1861 to 1865 on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Third Maine Volunteer Regiment, Company A, and civilians (women left at home during the Civil War) will be dressed in the attire of the Civil War Era with some of the GVD volunteers doing the same.

The Regiment will bring their Fife and Drums Corps and will fire antique muskets during the parade that begins at 9 a.m., and again at intervals on the event field throughout the day. They will all be available to answer questions.

The music will be of that period as well, by bluegrass trio, Kind Folk.
