1931 – 2015

BANGOR — Our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Alice “Emma” Holt, passed away Friday, Sept. 4, at the age of 84, surrounded by her loving family.

Emma was born in Portland on March 7, 1931, the daughter of the late Roland F. Capen and Lumina Cote Capen. She grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1950. She worked in several insurance agencies as a CSR, then studied and later received her agent’s license. She worked in the insurance field 35 years before retiring.

She loved playing cards of all sorts: bridge, pinochle, and hand & foot; and knitting.

On July 3, 1950, she married Robert H. Holt, who was a firefighter for the city of Auburn.

Emma was dedicated to the community and worked in several places. She was leader of Girl Scout Troop 150 of New Auburn. She was secretary to the ELHS Band while her daughters were majorettes. She was president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Auburn Fire Department, known as the Sparketts. She belonged to the Insurance Women of Southern Maine and was a charter member of the Insurance Women of Androscoggin County.

In 1992, she moved to Sacramento, Calif., where she lived for 7 years. She was a Eucharistic Minister at St. John’s Church in Carmicheal, Calif., and belonged to the New Comers Club. She joined the bridge group, and two pinochle groups, one a traveling one. She made many new friends. She moved back to Sabattus and was a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Cross Church in Lewiston, and was on the council group which was involved in their fundraising projects. She moved to Hampden in 2004 and was President of the Senior Citizens, and worked at different functions. She was a volunteer at Roe Village Senior Lunch on Tuesdays and worked at Seniors at the Kiwanis Hall on Thursday for lunches. She also Volunteered at the food cupboard in Hampden and volunteered at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the gift shop once a week.

Emma loved life and shared so many happy memories with her husband, Robert, who predeceased her in October of 2012. Family was always her focus. She was always giving of herself and asked little in return.

Christmas was always a favorite time of year and she would make a big deal about it. So many wonderful memories were shared during the holiday and we will remember them for years to come.

She was very involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always made time to make sure she was there for as many events in their lives as possible, which were many.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Nancy Heroux and husband, Raymond, of Bangor, Debra Tardif and husband, Dana, of Hampden, Marc Holt and wife, Phyllis, of Hartford; five grandsons, Michael Tardif and wife, Megan, of Hampden, Scott Tardif of Belgrade, Mont., and Sean Tardif and wife, Johanna, of Bangor, Jas and Jonathan Holt of Hartford; five step-grandchildren, Kim, Craig, Laurie, Jennifer and Julie of Massachusetts; great-grandchildren, Allayna (Ally) and Charlotte Tardif of Hampden, Darcy, Daphne and Miles Tardif of Bangor, Brooke, Levi, Catelynn and Zeppelin Holt of Hartford; 8 step-great-grandchildren, Dameon, Mathew, Ryan, Jacob, Andrew, Alexander, Grace, Jillian, and Nathan.
