LEWISTON — A new session of From Cancer to Health will begin Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St., Lewiston.

From Cancer to Health is a support program designed by Ohio State University and supported by the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society. The group meets weekly for 18 weeks, then monthly for “maintenance” meetings for eight months.

Led by Theresa Baudette, an oncology counselor at the Dempsey Center, the course focuses on managing participants’ stress while providing emotional support to decrease side effects from treatment, and strives to offer therapy to deal with issues individuals going through cancer may face that cannot be addressed with traditional cancer treatment.

Some of the course’s holistic treatments include progressive muscle relaxation, which helps participants recognize areas of tension in their bodies to promote relaxation and alleviate stress, as well as assertive communication, which assists participants with ways of vocalizing their needs and concerns effectively. From Cancer to Health also serves as an outlet to extend connections with other individuals going through similar experiences, Beaudette explained.

Space is still available in the upcoming session of From Cancer to Health. For more information, or to register, visit dempseycenter.org, or call 207-795-8250.
