100 years ago, 1915
Protesting their earnest desire for an early peace and renewing their love for the Fatherland, 300 German-Americans met in annual convention in Lewiston, Sunday, and wound up with a Gartenfest, a real picnic, at Lisbon Falls. The club house, Ash and Canal streets, was thrown wide open to the convention. Resolutions declaring that everything possible toward influencing a world peace should be done.

50 years ago, 1965
Willie R. Brule, 110 Second St . Auburn, who befriended Sandy Saddler, former featherweight boxing champion, when he was here for the Clay-Liston heavyweight boxing bout in May, has received a letter from the former champ. At the time, Brule had Saddler as a guest at his home prior to the fight and then took him to the bus terminal to catch a bus back to New York. Saddler visited at the Brule home instead of going to a hotel. “Just a note,” wrote Saddler. “to say ‘Hello’ and to thank you for the kind hospitality that was given to me by you during my visit there in your city. Even though time has passed one never forgets a fine gentleman like you. I would be happy to hear from you at your convenience. Best regards to your wife.”

The chairwoman of the Greene Cable Television Committee suggested telecasting from Greene Central School as members of the committee met with the general manager of United Video Cable Vision last week to discuss cable service. Committee chairwoman Sally Hebert asked General Manager Randy Hughes to check on the status of an outlet at the school that would allow telecasts. Ms. Hebert suggested videotaping plays and other school programs.
