WEST PARIS — Tom Gallant of West Paris has joined a team of 10 to serve with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Orono, through the Maine Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA program. The term of service is for one year. He joined Aug. 7.

Gallant is helping raise awareness and mobilize college campuses throughout Maine to end hunger for low-income individuals. He is focused on providing a platform for Maine college students to actively address food insecurity on their campuses and in their communities. He is also involved in initiatives that bring attention to the link between food insecurity, college access and low retention rates on Maine campuses.

AmeriCorps VISTA programming builds the organizational, administrative and financial capacity of nonprofit organizations to fight poverty. Maine Campus Compact’s VISTA program is focused on increasing college access and success for K-12 students as a long-term method for decreasing poverty rates.
