NEW GLOUCESTER — A transient couple was arrested and charged with assaulting a local man at his home late Thursday night, authorities said.

A man and a woman broke down the door to a home at 494 Snow Hill Road shortly before midnight, according to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Dale Eldridge, 42, is accused of beating the victim with his fists, a rake handle and a wooden cane, according to the release. Kristin Dunphy, 33, was also charged. Eldridge and Dunphy are transients in Portland.

The victim, who had been at home with his mother, fended off the blows by the couple after receiving facial injuries. He refused transport to a hospital.

Eldridge was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated criminal trespass and aggravated criminal mischief. Dunphy was charged with aggravated criminal trespass and simple assault.

Eldridge was held at Cumberland County Jail in Portland in lieu of $25,000 cash bail; Dunphy on $1,500 cash bail.
