LEWISTON — A man escaped apparent injury Monday night when his car struck a utility pole and flipped over on Horton Street, Lewiston police officer Zachary Provost said.

Eyewitneses said the driver ran a stop sign and his car clipped one he was trying to miss, struck a utility pole and rolled several times, landing on its roof.

The driver, whose identity was not immediately available, managed to get out of the overturned sedan.

The accident occurred in front of 110 Horton St. at about 7:30 p.m. and firefighters were called to the scene.

The utility pole was knocked halfway over, causing wires to hang over the middle of the street. Central Maine Power was restoring power by 8 p.m. and the street was closed while cleanup was underway.

The driver of the other car was not immediately released.
