AUBURN — Three men who police said decided to beat up someone at random have been indicted on charges of robbery and assault.

Police arrested and charged with elevated aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated assault:

* Patrick Alexander III, 19, of 93 Shawmut St., Lewiston;

* Zachary Hoyt, 20, of Litchfield; and

* Brandon Roy, 19, of 81 Shawmut St., Lewiston.

Police said witnesses told them that a group of drunken men ran from a Shawmut Street apartment in Lewiston late at night on July 21 yelling that they were going to randomly fight someone.

The group blocked the roadway, refusing to let a man driving a gold SUV pass by. The man later told police he had been visiting his estranged wife who lived on Shawmut Street and was attempting to leave, according to an affidavit by Lewiston Police Detective Crystal LaChance.

Witness said the men yelled, “N—–, don’t get out of your car,” as they pounded on the SUV’s windows.

The man stepped out of his vehicle and was attacked by several of the men, according to the witness in the affidavit.

The victim fell to the ground as men in the group punched and kicked him. As police approached, one of the men took the victim’s wallet. The victim was left lying on the ground bleeding from his head, LaChance’s affidavit said.

The victim told police he had asked the men in the roadway to move. They refused and told him not to get out of his car, using a racial epithet. He left his car and was punched by one man, then others punched and kicked him. He said he lost consciousness, but didn’t know for how long.

His injuries included a broken nose, broken teeth, a dislocated shoulder, abrasions and bruising.

Alexander also was charged with robbery, a Class A felony, punishable by up to 30 years in prison. The charge of elevated aggravated assault carries the same penalties. Aggravated assault, a Class B felony, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

LaChance wrote that Roy gave consent to search his apartment, where police found a Gritty’s mug club card No. 150. The victim said that card belonged to him.

An Androscoggin County grand jury indicted the three men this month.

Alexander and Hoyt were released from Androscoggin County Jail after posting $1,060 cash bail and signing a supervision contract with Maine Pretrial Services. Roy was released after posting $560 in bail and signing a supervision contract.
