LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women, 97 Blake St., will host a crone retreat at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

To be called a “crone” was once an insult, meaning a withered, witch-like, old woman. The center is redefining a crone as “a woman venerated for her experience, judgment and wisdom.” As women today embrace positive aspects of aging, they have begun to recover a more ancient and joyful understanding of the older woman as wise teacher and healer. It is the third of three stages of a woman’s life — maiden, mother and crone.

The retreat will celebrate the gifts of aging consciously. Women 50 and older are invited to attend.

Tammie Fowels, psychotherapist, spiritual life coach and certified celebrant, will lead the retreat. She’s authored “BirthQuake: The Journey to Wholeness,” which inspired the PBS program, “BirthQuake: Stories of Transformative Life Events.” Fowels has a master’s degree in social work and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology. Leslie Hyde and Kim Emery will join Fowels.

Space is limited, and those interested in attending should call Klara Tammany at 207-513-3922 to reserve a spot. A light lunch will be provided for those who register ahead of time. Walk-ins will be welcomed if space is available.

In lieu of admission, participants are asked to make a donation to the center.
