AUBURN — Jessica Staples of Auburn, a student at Central Maine Community College, participated in the Exploring Transfer program at Vassar College last summer.

This intensive program introduces community college students to the possibilities of transferring to a wide range of four-year colleges and universities.

“The classes were co-taught by two different professors, making every class more like a conversation and less like teaching something out of a book,” said Staples. “There were rigorous amounts to be read, multiple essays to be written and quite a bit of research to be done . . . No rest for the studious seemed to be the slogan at Vassar, and boy did we become aware of it!”

Staples said she was given seven books to read and that professors wanted students to synthesize the knowledge acquired through the readings and writings, and to apply it during discussions and debate.

A president’s honors student in the general studies program at CMCC, Staples plans to pursue studies in translation and foreign languages after she graduates.
