FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington has announced its calendar events for October.

Wednesday, Oct. 7

Trash Day, UMF Mantor Green, 11:35 a.m. — The UMF Sustainable Campus Coalition holds an annual educational event where they go through 24 hours worth of trash from the residence halls. See how much of what is thrown away can be composted, upcycled or recycled on a daily basis. FREE.

Roundtable on European Migration Crisis — Room 101, Roberts Learning Center, noon. Due to the escalation of violence in the Middle East, tens of thousands are crossing the treacherous Mediterranean in hopes of seeking refuge in Europe. This massive influx will undoubtedly create issues for European countries, their economies and citizens. This discussion, led by several UMF faculty members, will analyze the current crisis.

Discover the World: Asia — The Landing, Olsen Student Center, 4 p.m. Join us for the first of five events to be held this academic year. This month, explore Asian cultures through music, food and activities. FREE.

The Public Classroom: The High Costs of Child Abuse and Neglect — Emery Community Arts Center, 7 p.m. In this talk, Kathy Kemp, lecturer in rehabilitation services, will look at the high costs of childhood abuse and neglect. Part of the Public Classroom UMF Faculty Speaker Series. FREE. Sponsored by UMF Office of the President.

Tuesday, Oct. 13

Democratic Debate, The Landing, Olsen Student Center, 9 p.m. — The UMF College Democrats invites you to view the first televised Democratic debate. Food and drink will be provided. Bring a friend. The debate starts at 9 p.m., but feel free to come early and talk politics with the College Democrats. FREE.

Microenterprise: A Tool for Women’s Empowerment in El Salvador — Room CR-123, Olsen Student Center, 11:45 a.m. Fatima Pacas from San Salvador, El Salvador, will share her experiences working with women and their communities and how the legacy of violence and poverty of post-war El Salvador impacts the current social position of women and opportunities for empowerment. Fatima will highlight two women’s cooperatives, Acomujerza and Acaccpamu as a case study of how micro-enterprise and education are tools used to empower women to provide a better life for themselves, their families and contribute to their local economy. FREE.
