NEWRY — The Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation group has hired Barbara Schneider as its new executive director.

Deb Maxfield, director of marketing and development, said Schneider will assume the role at the organization’s board meeting in late October.

She will succeed Peter Adams, who served as executive director the past six years.

“I look forward to joining this amazing team and meeting the hundreds of dedicated members of the Maine Adaptive community,” Schneider said. “I am committed to this organization, as I have witnessed firsthand the unique opportunities provided to so many who may otherwise not experience the freedom, exhilaration or independence offered by taking part in sport.”

Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round education and training in active recreation for individuals with physical disabilities and aims to teach them self-confidence, self-motivation, increased physical strength and an improved self-image.

David Van Slyke, Maine Adaptive board president, said in a news release Wednesday that Schneider “has a strong history of public advocacy and will bring leadership and energy to our year-round recreation programs for individuals with physical disabilities.”

Schneider earned a law degree from Harvard University and had a successful legal career at Murray Plumb & Murray in Portland, Maxfield said.

She said Schneider has more than 15 years of experience in nonprofit administration and is an active player in the winter sports arena, serving as a PSIA Alpine Level III instructor and the operator of the ski and ride school at Sunday River ski resort for older children.
