GRAY — In a game dominated by defensive wizardry, it was fitting that the only points Friday night at Burbank Field weren’t produced by either offense.

Ben Ekedahl returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown with 9:33 remaining,  then kicked the extra point to seal undefeated Cape Elizabeth’s 6-0 victory over Gray-New Gloucester.

Each team had a goal-line stand in the game. Cape (6-0) stopped Gray-New Gloucester (4-2) inside the 20-yard line in the final minute to close it out.

The Patriots stalled a Cape series at the GNG-15 in the first quarter. The Capers answered by stopping the home team on downs at the 24 early in the second.

Cape drove inside the 5 with two seconds remaining in the half. An apparent touchdown on the next play was waved off.

Gray-New Gloucester pushed to the 1-yard line on its initial drive of the second half but was stonewalled.

The Patriots used a trick play to convert fourth-and-3 from their own 15 to extend the game, eventually crossing well into Cape territory before the tank ran dry.

Cape travels to Yarmouth for a showdown of the only 6-0 teams in Class C South next Friday.
