LEWISTON — First day of the Dempsey Challenge, a run, walk and cycle fundraiser for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, 6:45 a.m. opening ceremonies led by Patrick Dempsey at start stage, followed by 10K walk, 5K walk/run, Cancer Survivor Walk, “Thank You” from Patrick Dempsey, and free, family-friendly Festival in the Park, 8 a.m. to  p.m., Simard-Payne Memorial Park. LEWISTON — Talks and book signings by authors, 1 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 18 to Nov. 8, Callahan Hall, Lewiston Public Library. Novelist Nuruddin Farah, author of “Hiding in Plain Sight,” will be featured Oct. 18. He is a Somali expatriate who lives in Cape Town, South Africa, and New York, where he is a professor of literature at Bard College.
