FARMINGTON — Two 3-year-old children reported missing Monday were found safe and in good condition at a residence about half a mile from a preschool an hour after police were called, officer Darin Gilbert said.

Representatives of the preschool and others in the area looked for the girl and boy. When they could not find them, they called Franklin County dispatchers at 12:51 p.m. to report them missing. The school is on a dirt road off Route 4, which is known locally as Fairbanks Road.

Gilbert declined to say how long people looked for the children before law enforcement, firefighters and other agencies were called.

The children were found at 1:50 p.m., Gilbert said Tuesday morning.

A report of the incident will be given to the District Attorney’s Office to review, he said.

In Gilbert’s news release issued Monday night, the Farmington Police Department thanked agencies for a quick response and readiness to bring the search to a positive conclusion.

Assisting agencies were Farmington Fire & Rescue Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Maine Forest Service, Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service and the University of Maine at Farmington Police Department.
