AUGUSTA — The State of Maine is looking for the veterans: Purple Heart recipients, Prisoners of War, or the families of those who died during World War II, Korea and Vietnam wars; and recipients and/or families thereof of the Gold, Silver, or Bronze Star Medals. The state has established a recognition program to honor the service and sacrifice of its veterans who were wounded, POWs, MIAs or died in support of combat operations since the beginning of World War II.

The Bureau, or as it is better known “Maine Veterans’ Services,” conducts periodic presentation ceremonies around the State to provide an opportunity for the family and friends of veterans to attend a local recognition ceremony to see their loved one recognized for their military service.

Organizer Hon. Sheryl Briggs plans to have another ceremony in the River Valley area at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Post No. 100 Dixfield American Legion Hall to honor such recipients.

If the veteran or family would like to receive a Certificate of Recognition, a simple application should be completed and accompanied by their DD-214 and/or discharge to receive the medal(s) and/or certificate, she said.

The application form may also be picked up at the Mexico Town Office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, or by calling Sheryl Briggs at 207-364-5665.
