AUGUSTA — A legislator wants to bring the state police “fusion center” under legislative oversight.

The Maine Information and Analysis Center is one of dozens of such centers created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism attacks to help law enforcement officials share information.

Many were unaware of the center’s activities before the LePage administration announced at a drug summit that Maine’s fusion center would be used to fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

Democratic Rep. Charlotte Warren of Hallowell said her search found little or no information about the center’s authority or oversight. She said there have been privacy concerns raised in other states.

The Legislative Council will meet later this week to consider bills for upcoming session. Warren said she’s hopeful her proposal will clear the hurdle to be considered.
