PARIS — Wizards and zombies and muggles, oh my!

Attendees can view these and other magical creatures at this weekend’s Nevaeh Dance Company presents Muggle Magic. The free event will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Moore Park on Route 26 in Paris. Donations are welcome and audience members are encouraged to set up their blankets and chairs ahead of time.

“One lucky family will get the bench,” laughed Nettie Gentempo, who’s part of the dance troupe.

Audience members can also dress up and embrace the Halloween spirit. A prize will be given for the most creative costume, she said.

This Halloween and Harry Potter-inspired show plays off the term “muggles,” which in the Harry Potter wizarding world refers to nonmagical people. It will be hosted by none other than Harry Potter himself, and he will be played by Jack Gentempo, who’s dark hair, black, circular-rimmed glasses and gold and burgundy striped scarf make him a perfect stand in for boy wizard hero made popular by British author J.K. Rowling.

Nettie wanted to put a Halloween-themed show this year and she tapped her younger brother and the rest of the troupe to help out.

“Jack has some really good Harry Potter comedy and material so having him host it that way [made sense],” she said.

There will be plenty of magic, including enchanted brooms. Other characters in the show include witches, a house elf, psychic, ghosts, a skeleton and hip hop girls.

“[We’ll have] all of it,” their sister and fellow dancer, Hannah Gentempo, said.

Nettie explained the troupe has been practicing in the park all year.

“We are pretty much the studio homeless dancers. … It’s been really nice to dance here. It’s the first cold day,” troupe member Tegan Bullard said last weekend prior to their practice.

While dancing in their makeshift studio, there is always an audience. People pull over and watch and others get a view from their homes surrounding the park.

“We just wanted to put on a show for the community,” member Greta Giasson said.

That’s why they’re performing the same show on Friday, Oct. 23, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, also in Paris.

Neither shows will be passive for attendees, the dance group said.

“There will be audience participation and maybe even some candy,” Nettie said. “We are trying to incorporate the landscape into the [Saturday] show.”

While some of the dances will have been used in previous Nevaeh shows, there is new material as well.

“There will definitely be surprises in the show,” Nettie said.

“Wardrobe malfunction,” Hannah suggested, laughing. “It’s definitely going to be fun.”

She added there is no rain date for the show and if there is rain the forecast, the troupe will do a rain dance to ward off the precipitation. Jack promised to tap into his felix felicis potion, which Harry Potter uses as a good luck charm in one the later books in the series.
