BIDDEFORD — Leavitt’s first trip to storied Waterhouse Field in Biddeford was a triumphant and productive one Friday night.

The Hornets clicked on all cylinders offensively and played one of their toughest defensive games of the season, as well, taking out the Tigers, 40-27.

With its third consecutive victory, Leavitt (6-2) likely clinches the No. 2 seed behind Falmouth (7-1) in the Class B South playoffs and will host either Morse or Greely next Friday.

“It means we’re home for a week, and if we’re able to take care of business there, home for another week,” Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway said.

Big plays gave Leavitt the advantage from the get-go.

Levi Craig and Billy Bedard ran for touchdowns of 79 and 54 yards in the first quarter. The Hornets cashed in both two-point conversions for a 16-0 advantage.

Leavitt stopped Biddeford on downs at the 16-yard line, but the Tigers (5-3) finally produced points on their next drive when Joey Curit fired a 40-yard touchdown pass to Josh Dutremble.

“The defense played great,” Hathaway said. “John Rousseau had a whale of game. He and Hunter Sirois kind of contained Curit. They had a nice drive for their first touchdown, but most of their points were off a short field.”

That was the case with a touchdown just before the half. Leavitt lined up to punt, but a bad snap led to a block and put the Tigers in business at the 5 with 1:27 left in the half.

Dutremble scored from 2 yards out, and it was 16-14 at the break.

Biddeford held Leavitt’s opening drive of the half, but a 62-yard strike from Craig to Max Green and another two-point conversion made it 24-14.

Back stormed Biddeford on a TD pass from Curit to Jeremy Lugiano.

Then it was all Hornets. Sirois capped a long drive with a 8-yard TD run, and Craig scored from 30 yards out. Leavitt also intercepted Curit to stop a Biddeford drive.

Curit capped the scoring with a quarterback sneak on the final play.

“It was a big win,” Hathaway said. “One of the coaches said it was one of the closest lopsided wins we’ve ever had.”

Craig rolled up more than 360 yards of total offense.

Boothbay 8, Winthrop/Monmouth 6

WINTHROP – Boothbay shut out Winthrop/Monmouth until five minutes remained in the game Friday night and pulled off the biggest upset of the Class D South campaign, 8-6, at Maxwell Field.

The loss will cost the Ramblers (4-3) the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. They drop to fourth and will host Maranacook in the quarterfinals.

Dima Gosselin gave the Seahawks (2-5) the lead with a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter. Xavier Downing rushed for the two points.

Matt Ingram connected with Antonio Meucci from 17 yards for the Winthrop/Monmouth score. The Ramblers intended to pass for the conversion but fumbled the snap. Alec Brown recovered the ball for the Ramblers and was smothered by the Seahawks shy of the goal line.
