AUBURN — John Edward Breedlove Hooke, 89, died on Monday, Oct. 26, four days after his precious wife, Nancy. He died at the Hospice House in Auburn. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ following a long illness.
He was born on Dec. 25, 1925, in Bangor, the son of Georgia Shaw and Walter S. Breedlove.
John graduated from Medford High School in Medford, Mass., in 1944. After graduation, he served in World War II in Germany as a staff sergeant, HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment of the 71st Infantry Division. Upon returning to the states, he graduated from Northeastern University, in Boston, Mass., in 1953 with a degree in business. He was enrolled in the Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Program.
John enjoyed the field of business and he established a machine tool business in Bridgeport, Conn., and Springfield, Vt. He founded Northeast Rebuilders and worked until he was well into his late 70s.
John married Nancy Archibald on July 30, 1950, in Boston, Mass., where they met.
John and Nancy raised their family in Connecticut and Vermont, where they had many good family friends. Nancy and John spent many years on Islesboro with their family, where they retired to. There are many family connections to the island.
John was a member of the Unity Bible Church in Lewiston. He also had been a member of the Second Baptist Church in Islesboro.
John enjoyed tennis, golfing, singing, skiing, sailing, tinkering around the house on Islesboro and spending time with his family. He loved his family dearly and spent as much time with them as possible.
Survivors include his five children, Cynthia A. Henderson (David) of Glens Falls, N.Y., John Douglas Hooke (Joan) of Springfield, Vt., Elizabeth H. Hansen (Michael) of Auburn, Robert H. Hooke of Rockport, and Marintha M. Iverson (Fraser Shilling) of Davis, Calif.; his grandchildren, Ethan Henderson (Kristen) of Argyle, N.Y., Katherine Clatworthy (Nicholas) of Glens Falls, N.Y., Melissa Hooke (Paul Russo) of Crawfordville, Fla., Gary Hooke of Grafton, Vt., Jennifer Buxton (John) of Northfield, Mass., Holly Hooke of Springfield, Vt., John Hansen (Mindy) of Auburn, Amelia Pullen (Ian) of Minot, Laura Foss (Ethan) of Auburn, Mariah Does-Hooke of Rockport, Matt Does of Breckenridge, Colo., Marintha Deen (Marcus Wilson) of Davis, Calif., Emmett Iverson of Davis, Calif., Elsa Iverson of Davis, Calif, and Gregory Shilling of Davis, Calif., 10 great-grandchildren; and several cousins.
In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by Spencer Scott Deen, his missing father, Walter S. Breedlove; and his recently deceased wife, Nancy Helen (Archibald) Hooke.
